Engine Re&Re Tips

I just went through this on my truck and thought I would post some tips that might help others. I'll add more as time allows. Feel free to post your tips.

Things that make removal easier:
  • Remove the front differential before you do anything. You don't have to pull the CV shafts, just unbolt them at the diff. It gives you the room to clear the oil pan, especially if you have a manual transmission. AT people, you might be able to get away with not doing this.
  • Before removing any bellhousing bolts, pull the intake plenum and all the associated bits at the top of the engine (and the blower too, obviously). You'll be able to get to the top 2 bolts from the top with a good wrench, easier than using 14 feet worth of extensions.
  • Disconnect the heater core hoses gently, this will save you from having to replace the core or the ends.
  • I found it easier to pull the motor with the manifolds on, some manuals suggest removing them. I found it easier to just undo the 3 bolts at the B pipes.
  • DON'T FORGET THE CRANK SENSOR ON THE BELLHOUSING! You will break it off trying to separate the motor from the trans if you're not careful.
Pulling the Engine:
  • If you're lifted or have big tires you'll need to remove them and lower the truck down onto jack stands unless your engine crane can go super high.
I didn't have one of those fancy bolt to the intake things, so using the exhaust manifolds was an easy way to have it some what level on the cherry picker.
  • Try not to slam the oil pain into the front crossmember if you have to re use it. The one on mine was an aftermarket and it easily dented.
  • Have a friend or someone operate the cherry picker while you check for all the wires you forgot to disconnect.
